Documentary photography — Japanese textile workshop, sashiko stitching, indigo, boro

Fifty-five-year-old textile artist working in sashiko stitching and boro construction in Hirosaki, Aomori Prefecture — Japan's deep north. He adds his stitches to textiles already layered and stitched by previous hands: 'I'm continuing a conversation that started before I was born.' He maintains a living indigo vat, feeds it every few days, and checks its health by the coppery iridescence of the surface film. His left hand carries a permanent indigo stain that never fully washes out. He stops after three hours because his spacing drifts. 'My hand knows before my eye does.'
