Fifty-five-year-old painter of interiors on Büyükada, the largest of Istanbul's Princes' Islands. She paints rooms, hallways, thresholds — what a room knows about the people who have lived in it. Her epiphany came standing before Hammershøi's grey Copenhagen interiors at Ordrupgaard: she felt not inspired but recognized. She uses a narrow palette — raw umber, yellow ochre, Naples yellow, zinc white, ivory black, and a watery indigo from a Kyoto residency. Her signature is the through-view: one room seen through another, doors aligned in the Ottoman enfilade.
